Finding Equipment

Students and staff of the 5 Colleges, Claremont Graduate University, or Keck Graduate Institute can check-out gear for free from the OTL Gear Room.

On The Loose also has some gear for purchase and we've arranged special discounts for OTL-members at several local equipment stores. Check them out!

Local Retailers

REI:

REI is the classic (but expensive) outdoors store. REI has climbing, hiking, backpacking, camping, biking, canoeing, etc. supplies as well as a good stock of guidebooks and topo maps. They also rent some equipment. OTL has a membership card that gets us a rebate after each year - use it for all OTL purchases.

Sports Chalet:

Sports Chalet is a huge sporting goods store close to campus. Take 6th Street across Monta Vista. Its the big store on the right before Central. They have climbing, camping, biking, and more traditional sports gear.

Schiro's Ski Shop:

This is a medium sized ski store with decent prices. They do pretty good tune up work and rent skis. It's on the corner of Foothill and Central.

M&I Surplus:

(909) 596-1924. M&I is located at 2090 N. Garey just above the 10 freeway. This is great army surplus store with all sorts of funky stuff. They have lots of cheap camping equipment and your usual selection of knives, tools, fake hand grenades, ammo boxes, a great selection of small army backpacks etc. M&I has a lot of the emergency stuff including emergency sunglasses, surgical scissors, tweezers etc. Lots of deals and a healthy alternative to yuppie REI.

Adventure16:

A16 is located near the 10 and 405 freeways in West LA. It takes about an hour to get there. This is a high class medium sized outdoor store with great selection of most climbing and backpacking equipment. Its definitely yuppie, but worth it if REI just doesn't have what your looking for. One of the best outdoor stores in the LA area. They also offer lots of classes and clinics in climbing, backpacking, outdoor photography etc.

The David and Margaret Home Bargain Boutique:

The DMH Bargain Boutique is at 1350 Third Street, La Verne. To get to third street, take Bonita west towards La Verne, get on to Third Street (which runs parallel to Bonita, one block south) by turning left on Wheeler or the next north-south street, then turn right on Third. The warehouse store is at the end of the street on the left. Drive into through the gate and park behind the large white building with the pillars at the end of the drive. The store often, but not always, has good bargains on food and slightly used or slightly defective outdoor gear. Companies give them returned gear or old patterns and styles which are no longer in the regular stores. The food items are ones with damaged wrappings, etc. You may have to go a few times to find anything good, but keep trying.

Bumstead's Bikes:

Located on 1038 4th Street in Ontario. Go East on the 10 until Mountain, get off and go south until you hit 4th. Turn left and its in a mini-mall on the corner. This a quality bike store with a trustworthy, friendly owner. The Claremont bike team used to go here and OTL bought some bikes here. Say you are from the colleges and a poor student and he'll help you out. Very reasonable prices and great workmanship.

Savon Drug:

At Foothill and Towne. A good selection of basic first aid supplies. Cheap prices although things may be cheaper elsewhere.

Wilderness Medical Instruments, Inc:

(303) 641-3572, PO Box 9, Pitkin, CO 81241. WMI has outdoors medical supplies at reduced prices. Explain that you are part of OTL (a college outdoors program) and you should get stuff at wholesale prices.
