Straight out the OTL guidebook, circa 2011:

Zach Siegel: "FORGET EVERYTHING YOU KNOW ABOUT SAND! Dune sand is very fine, dry, and comfortable in every way. It is comfortable to walk on, sit in, and lay down in. The sand is never the enemy. It won't get all up in your food unless you put it there. It won't get in your eyes or in your mouth more than you want it to, unless you are boarding. Maybe that's because it's so fine, or because there's no water, or because there's not much wind."

That's right, you heard the man, this Thursday (the first day of reading days) we're headed off to the Kelso Dunes which are only ~3 hours from Claremont and will totally blow your mind!

Once we get there, we'll set up camp by the side of the dirt road, We should have about 3 more hours of daylight at this point to go hike up some of the dunes, and to roll/run/ski/snowboard down them at our leisure. If you have an old trash can lid, janky skis/snowboards please bring them! I heard there's gonna be a yuuuuge snowstorm on Wednesday night so the pow should be nice and fluffy by Thursday afternoon. After finishing our dunes frolicking, we'll make dinner, chill, and hopefully get some good stargazing in (although unfortunately the moon will be half full which is kind of a bummer).

The next morning we'll make a quick breakfast, pack up camp being sure to leave no trace, and head out by around 9:30 am, which will get us back to campus by 1 pm on Friday 12/9 at the latest.

A final note, and this is serious: it will be really damn cold out there in the desert at night in December, we're talking temperatures down in the low 40s. Please bring the warmest clothes you own, I'm talking puffy jackets, gloves, hats, tights, long underwear. If you are planning on renting the OEC's warmest sleeping bag and you don't bring all that aforementioned gear you will most likely be cold at night which is never fun!!

Trip Difficulty: 4/10 because being cold at night is definitely Type II fun.
