To get to the top of San Jacinto, most resonable people take the Palm Springs tramway, which comfortably whisks them up 8,000ft. More adventurous types start from trailheads on the south side. And then there's fools like us who start from 400ft above sea level and climb to 10,800ft. Join us.Image result for cactus to clouds hikeThis hike begins in the parched Coachella Valley, populated by creosote bushes, cacti, and dust, and ascends to a lofty 10800ft conifer forest. Hard to find more diversity in single hike pretty much anywhere. From the summit of Mt. San Jacinto, and along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of desert, surrounding peaks, and (if you squint and use your imagination a bit) the ocean. We’ll hike all the way up, then take the Palm Springs tram down. This hike is a doozy, but so worth the effort!

On experience, fitness: Rated the 5th hardest day hike in the U.S. by Backpacker Magazine, this hike is… intense. It has over 10,000 ft of elevation gain and is 21 miles roundtrip (for reference, that’s approximately twice the elevation and length of the steepest descent into the Grand Canyon). To do this trip you should be in excellent(!!) endurance shape and be comfortable with altitude (it doesn’t matter how fit you are at sea level. People respond very differently to altitude).

On timing: Because this hike is so long, we will be leaving campus at 3am SHARP so we can start by 5am.
