"He loves rocks, beer, and mustaches."

Meet Bob Gains.

He is the man.*

He loves rocks, beer, and mustaches...*

He is able to get rocks to speak to him across eons of time, as if the rocks were an old grandpa telling a story he has heard many times.*

Being in the field with Bob is comparable to riding the space-time geometry of the universe with Albert Einstein, except with the addition of mustaches and rocks and hammers and penetrating devices.  Let me be clear:  IT'S AWESOME.*

Interested?  Here's your chance. Meet Bob Gains. Let him be your stand-in Grandpa, ride the space-time geometry of the universe as Bob Gains takes us back eons in time to the formative years of our local San Bernardino Mountains.

Also, learn shit about mustashes.

In case you're still not convinced:

HIS WORDS:

The Los Angeles Basin is flanked by four spectacular mountain ranges with three peaks greater than 10,000 feet (San Gorgonio 11,503’, San Jacinto 10,834’, San Antonio (Baldy) 10,068’). No doubt, you are aware that the local mountains provide fantastic opportunities for hiking, backpacking, climbing and exploring. You may not be aware, however, that the mountains are still going up – and fast – as a result of some of the most spectacularly active geology to be found on Earth. The ongoing uplift of the local mountains is due to our special location on a boundary between two massive tectonic plates that are in conflict. But the processes involved in throwing up these mountains are only the most recent part of the story. The bedrock of the local mountains has a history going back some 1.8 billion years. We invite you to come and learn about the geologic story behind the scenery in southern California.

"Without the guidance and careful tutelage of one Dr. Robert Gaines, I never would have come to appreciate the complex nuance and subtle finery of character the results from becoming an acute aficionado of all things hop-brewed and mustached.

Bob knows so much about the timescales that account for gradual change in the landscape from water's erosive force, and how to tease out those processes intellectually, that I feel more and more like an ancient as opposed to infantile resident of this amazing planet every time I journey into the field with him.

sulfur-reducing microbes and awful '80s hair rock

Bow down to a true master, we are beyond fortunate to hear his wisdom."

RULES AND REQUIREMENTS: I agree to conduct myself in accordance with Pomona's policies and procedures. I further agree to abide by all the rules and requirements of the Activity. I acknowledge that Pomona has the right to terminate my participation in the Activity if it is determined that my conduct is detrimental to the best interests of the group, my conduct violates any rule of the Activity, or for any other reason in Pomona's discretion.

In addition, I understand that as a Participant in the Activity, I will engage in physical activities, during which I could sustain serious personal injuries, illness, property damage, or even death. I understand that as a Participant in the Activity I could sustain serious personal injuries, illness, property damage, or even death as a consequence of not only Pomona's actions or inactions, but also the actions, inactions, negligence or fault of others, and that there may be other risks not known to me or not reasonably foreseeable at this time. I further understand and agree that any injury, illness, property damage, disability, or death that I may sustain by any means is my sole responsibility, except for those occurrences due to Pomona's gross negligence or intentional misconduct.

RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY: I, on behalf of myself, my personal representatives, heirs, executors, administrators, agents, and assigns, HEREBY RELEASE, WAIVE, DISCHARGE, AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE The Claremont Colleges (Pomona College, Harvey-Mudd College, Claremont McKenna College, Scripps College, Pitzer College, Claremont Graduate University, and the Keck Graduate Institute), its governing board, directors, officers, employees, agents, volunteers, and any students (hereinafter referred to as "Releasees") for any and all liability, including any and all claims, demands, causes of action (known or unknown), suits, or judgments of any and every kind (including attorneys' fees), arising from any injury, property damage or death that I may suffer as a result of my participation in the Activity, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE INJURY, DAMAGE OR DEATH IS CAUSED BY THE RELEASEES, UNLESS THE INJURY DAMAGE OR DEATH IS CAUSED BY THE RELEASEES' GROSS NEGLIGENCE OR INTENTIONAL MISCONDUCT, AND REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE INJURY DAMAGE OR DEATH OCCURS WHILE IN, ON, UPON, OR IN TRANSIT TO OR FROM THE PREMISES WHERE THE ACTIVITY, OR ANY ADJUNCT TO THE ACTIVITY, OCCURS OR IS BEING CONDUCTED.
